Democracy Day: FONWIP Urges Progress on Women’s Inclusion ... Commends Nigerians’ Resilience
Benin City- Former Edo State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development and Founder/President of the Forum of Nigeria Women in Politics [FONWIP], Hon (Dr.) Florence Gbinigie JP has called for accelerated inclusion of women in governance.
Dr. Gbinigie who made the call in her democracy message at the weekend noted that there is a great contrast between the past and present roles of women in Nigeria’s political space
“In the early years of our democracy, women were largely at the periphery – visible at rallies, but rarely at the decision-making table. Today, we see more women contesting elections, holding legislative seats, and heading ministries and agencies. Yet, we are still far from the 35 percent affirmative action which Nigeria committed to. Our democracy will remain incomplete until women’s voices are not just heard, but central to policy and power," she added
She emphasized that FONWIP’s work continues to focus on dismantling structural barriers, building the capacity of women aspirants, and advocating for electoral and party reforms that enable fair participation.
On the state of the nation, Dr. Gbinigie congratulated Nigerians for their endurance:
“I salute the Nigerian people for their patience and resilience despite the weight of economic hardship and the burden of insecurity in many communities. Democracy is tested not only in elections, but in how we stand together in difficult times.
"The masses have shown remarkable courage, and leaders must now match that sacrifice with accountable, people-centred governance,” she added.
Dr. Gbinigie further called on the federal, state, and local government leaders to prioritize security, economic relief, and inclusive governance as the true dividends of democracy.
According to her, Democracy Day reminds us that power belongs to the people.
"As we celebrate, let us recommit to a Nigeria where women lead, citizens are protected, and no one is left behind,” she said.
She disclosed that the Forum of Nigeria Women in Politics [FONWIP], founded by her is a non-partisan platform dedicated to mobilizing, training, and supporting women for leadership in Nigeria’s political system.
