Work in progress at Edo 100MW Power Plant Project

Work is progressing at the Edo State Government 100-megawatt power plant at Taihu Industrial Park in Ologbo, Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area.

The project, which also includes a 300 metric tonnes-per-day Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) facility, is being developed by Taihu Industry Park Ologbo Company Limited, a subsidiary of the China Clean Energy Technology Company Group.

The development formed part of Governor Monday Okpebholo’s SHINE Agenda aimed at transforming the state’s energy and industrial sectors.

Speaking during the groundbreaking ceremony held in March, Edo State Commissioner for Power, Paul Usebor, said the 100MW power plant would significantly improve electricity supply within the state and neighbouring regions, while the LNG facility would strengthen cleaner energy utilisation and energy security.

According to him, the project is expected to support industrial growth, attract investment and reduce the state’s dependence on unstable external electricity systems.

The state government said the initiative became more urgent following the shutdown of the Ossiomo Power Plant in September 2025 and ongoing challenges within the electricity distribution network managed by the Benin Electricity Distribution Company.

Officials on site pleading anonymity noted that the new facility would position Edo State as both a producer and supplier of electricity capable of powering industries and supporting economic expansion across the region.

In a move aimed at ensuring balanced development, Governor Okpebholo has also announced plans to establish a similar 100MW power facility in Edo Central Senatorial District.

The governor said the initiative is designed to decentralise electricity infrastructure and guarantee improved power supply for residents and businesses in Edo Central and Edo North Senatorial Districts.

Managing Director of Taihu Industry Park Ologbo Company Limited, Jiang Fan, expressed optimism about the project, revealing that the commissioning of the Ologbo power plant and LNG facility is scheduled for September 9, 2026.

He said the projects would contribute to economic growth, job creation and infrastructure development within the host community and the state at large.

Chairman of Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area described the project as a major milestone for the local government and Nigeria’s energy sector, noting that it would create employment opportunities, promote skills development and stimulate economic activities in surrounding communities.

Governor Okpebholo also linked the initiative to the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, stressing that stable electricity supply remains critical to industrialisation and sustainable economic growth.

The governor maintained that the state government acted swiftly to support the investor with land and other enabling conditions to ensure the success of the project and attract more investments into Edo State.
