Governor Monday Okpebholo Celebrates Cardinal Anthony Olubunmi Okogie on 59 Years of Priestly Service

Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has congratulated His Eminence, Anthony Olubunmi Cardinal Okogie, on his 59th anniversary in the Catholic priesthood, describing him as one of the country’s most respected moral voices and an enduring symbol of courage, humility, and principled leadership.

The Governor said Cardinal Okogie’s long service to the Church and the nation stands out as a shining example of what true devotion looks like. He noted that from his early years as a young priest to his time as Archbishop of Lagos and later as Cardinal, Okogie has consistently shown rare boldness in speaking truth, compassion toward the vulnerable, and a deep commitment to justice and human dignity.

Governor Okpebholo highlighted the Cardinal’s Edo roots, calling him “one of Uromi’s finest and a national treasure whose clarity of thought and balanced disposition have shaped public discourse for decades.” He added that the Cardinal has always found a way to pass difficult messages with maturity, grace, and unwavering conviction.

He further stated that Cardinal Okogie’s influence extends beyond the Church, pointing to his long-standing role as a voice of conscience in Nigeria. According to the Governor, the Cardinal’s interventions—whether on governance, morality, or national unity—have often served as reminders of the values needed to build a just and peaceful society.

Governor Okpebholo thanked God for keeping the Cardinal strong and prayed for many more years of sound health, peace, and fulfilment. He called on Nigerians to celebrate the milestone and to draw inspiration from the Cardinal’s life of discipline, sacrifice, and steadfast faith.

“As His Eminence marks 59 years of dedicated service, we rejoice with him and celebrate his remarkable journey. His legacy of courage and compassion remains a guide to all. May God continue to strengthen him and grant him more years in His service.”
