"Bail is Free" Campaign to be Launched In Asaba on Monday

 


In a bold step to combat corruption and impunity within Nigeria’s justice system, a World Press Conference to launch  “Bail is Free” campaign  will be held in Asaba, Delta State on Monday.

The event aims to raise public awareness and mobilize collective action against the unlawful collection of bail fees by law enforcement agents, reaffirming that, under Nigerian law, bail is free.

The press conference will follow a peaceful protest to be led by renowned human rights advocate, Rev. David Ugolor, Executive Director of the Africa Network for Environment and Economic Justice (ANEEJ). 

Rev. Ugolor, joined by a coalition of civil society organizations, human rights defenders, and concerned citizens, will match through the streets of Asaba demanding an end to systemic corruption and police impunity.

The need for urgent reforms in the Nigerian Police Force and the illegal commercialization of bail undermines public trust in the justice system.

“The time has come for all Nigerians to unite and demand transparency and accountability from our law enforcement agencies. Bail is a constitutional right, and it must not be sold.

The objectives of the “Bail is Free” campaign, include public sensitization, policy advocacy, legal support for victims of extortion, and collaboration with oversight bodies to enforce existing legal provisions.

The campaign is set to roll out nationwide, with Asaba serving as the launchpad for broader engagements across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.

We demand the immediate release of Mr. Henry Umukoro and his worker unjustly detained for a week. The Bail is Free Campaign is committed to justice, equity, and the protection of human rights. And through advocacy, education, and community engagement we will build a just society free from oppression and systemic abuse.
