Hearing Disorder: UBTH Consultant Warns Against Using Objects to Clean the Ear to Prevent Ear damage

 



A Consultant, Ear, Nose throat, Head and Neck Surgeon with the University of Benin Teaching Hospital,  Dr. Emmanuel Okoeguale has warned against using objects to clean the ear to prevent hearing problems.

The Consultant who gave the warning during a Seminar organized by the Institute of Child Health, University of Benin, UNIBEN/ University of Benin Teaching Hospital UBTH, in Benin City, said the ear is the road to the heart and if damaged it can trigger hearing disorder 

"The ear is very important for speech development, hearing ability and social interaction. The common hearing disorder starts with pain.

While noting that hearing lose should be identified early in life in children, Dr. Okoeguale disclosed that the ear clean itself and does not need the putting of objects inside the ear.

"Stop using objects to clean your ears. Say No to using cotton buds and keys. Avoid foreign body in the ear," he added.

He advised that children should be taken to the hospital when they complain to see a trained doctor to prevent hearing loss and reduce its impact.

He said a lot of people have ears but cannot hear, adding that early detection will prevent long term disability 

The Chairman of the Seminar, Prof. (Mrs.) Amina Okakhu said there is need for routing screening for children to ensure the child learns well 

"We must look out and identify people with hearing loss in our schools, family and proffer solutions early," she added.

The Director, Institute of Child Health, Prof. Dr Ayebor  Sadoh who was represented by Dr.  (Mrs.) Enako noted that with the economic conditions in the country it is better to prevent diseases and with this age of ear sets, ear pod, parents should regulate their use and duration.
