From Words to Proof: Gov. Okpebholo’s Game-Changing Tour with Eedris Abdulkareem -- By Abdul-Kadir Abdullah

In a political environment often dominated by press statements and counter-statements, the Governor of Edo State, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has chosen a different path, one that replaces rhetoric with reality.

His recent decision to take outspoken Nigerian musician, Eedris Abdulkareem, on a tour of ongoing and completed projects across Edo State marks a bold shift in governance communication, from words to proof.

The visit came against the backdrop of public criticism, as Abdulkareem had questioned what governments, particularly under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, were doing with the proceeds from the removal of fuel subsidy.

Rather than respond with a conventional rebuttal, Okpebholo opted for a more compelling approach.  He invited the critic to see the work for himself.

What followed was more than a routine inspection. It was a carefully executed transparency initiative that allowed an independent voice to verify the administration’s claims firsthand. From road projects to schools and healthcare facilities, the governor laid bare the tangible outcomes of his policies, demonstrating that governance, at its core, must be measured by visible impact.

Speaking during the tour, Okpebholo reiterated his commitment to leaving Edo State better than he met it, emphasizing that development must translate into real improvements in the lives of the people.

He noted that increased federal allocations are being strategically deployed to deliver critical infrastructure, adding that the growing support from residents is a direct reflection of projects they can see and feel.

For Abdulkareem, the experience proved decisive. What began as skepticism gave way to acknowledgment, as the musician openly commended the scale of work he witnessed. His remarks carry particular significance, not as political endorsement, but as validation rooted in direct observation.

This is where the governor’s strategy stands out. By engaging a critic rather than dismissing him, Okpebholo effectively turned doubt into an opportunity for credibility. In doing so, he extended the conversation beyond one individual to the broader public, many of whom share similar concerns.

Critics who argue that the governor accorded unnecessary attention to Abdulkareem may be overlooking a crucial point. The fact is that, in modern communication, influence matters. By choosing a figure with an independent voice and a wide audience, the governor ensured that the message, backed by evidence, would travel farther and resonate more deeply.

More importantly, the tour underscores a leadership style grounded in openness. It reflects a willingness to be scrutinized, a confidence in performance, and an understanding that trust is built not through declarations, but through demonstration.

At a time when public skepticism runs high, Okpebholo’s approach offers a compelling lesson in governance. The lesson is that, the most effective response to criticism is not always a statement, it is proof.

And sometimes, the most powerful message a leader can send is simple: Come and see.
