EKPOMA DISTURBANCE: APC CONDEMNS POLITICAL MANIPULATION OF SECURITY CONCERNS

The All Progressives Congress (APC), Edo State Chapter, has followed with keen interest the recent security-related disturbances in Ekpoma and wishes to address the public on the unfortunate events that accompanied what was described as a protest.

While the APC acknowledges the constitutional right of citizens to peaceful protest, it is important to state unequivocally that the incident in Ekpoma cannot genuinely qualify as a peaceful protest. Rather, emerging facts and credible reports indicate that the gathering was a politically motivated scheme designed to undermine the deliberate and visible efforts of the present administration to reduce crime to the barest minimum in Ekpoma and Edo State at large.

Disturbingly, individuals who converged on Ekpoma under the guise of protesting killings allegedly linked to herdsmen were largely imported elements, whose actions went beyond civic engagement and clearly targeted the destruction of billboards and materials bearing the images of Governor Monday Okpebholo and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. This deliberate focus exposes the protest as an anti-Okpebholo and anti-Tinubu political action, rather than a sincere call for improved security.

It is on record that prior to the emergence of the present administration, insecurity in Ekpoma was significantly worse, with criminal activities affecting not only residents but also the academic community. Since assuming office, Governor Monday Okpebholo has introduced strategic security measures, strengthened coordination with law enforcement agencies, and prioritised intelligence-driven interventions aimed at restoring safety and public confidence.

The people of Ekpoma are not oblivious to these efforts. Indeed, the good people of Ekpoma have consistently expressed strong belief and confidence in the current government’s resolve to tackle insecurity. This confidence was further justified as, within a short time of the disturbance, the security apparatus swiftly swung into action, with the Commissioner of Police personally coordinating responses to restore calm and prevent escalation.

Given the pattern, timing, and conduct of the disturbance, it is difficult to ignore clear indications that the incident was sponsored by opposition interests and their cronies, seeking to politicise genuine security concerns for selfish advantage. Such actions are not only irresponsible but also endanger the peace and stability of the community.

Security remains a collective responsibility, and no government can succeed when its sincere efforts are deliberately sabotaged for political gain. The APC therefore calls on all well-meaning Edo citizens, traditional institutions, community leaders, and political actors to reject violence, resist manipulation, and support the government’s ongoing efforts to secure lives and property.

The Edo State Government remains firmly on top of the security situation. Its commitment is unwavering, its actions are deliberate, and its resolve to protect the people of Edo State will not be distracted by politically orchestrated disruptions.
