UN urged to implement recommendations on Human Rights Violations
As Nations celebrate International Anti-corruption Day December 9, 2025 the United Nations Human Rights Committee has been urged to implement its recommendations on human rights violations and to address the prevailing poverty and lack of job opportunities for youths in Nigeria.
The Executive Director of Africa Network for Environment and Economic Justice, ANEEJ, Rev David Ugolor who made this observation during a special zoom webinar on the United Nations Human Rights Committee: Dissemination of the Priority Recommendations addressed to the state of Nigeria said because of poverty young people are being used to engage in violence in the country.
"Our youths are easily recruited due to poverty and lack of jobs, thereby making conflict a source of income.
"They have become conflict entrepreneurs due to the lack of jobs, no job opportunities and the youths see this as the only way to survive.
"Efforts must be made to open up the space for young people to be engaged and these should be included in the recommendations by the UN.
"ANEEJ and the Centre for Civil and Political Rights, CCPR, will throw more light on these observations and the Civil Society Organisations, CSOs will continue to engage with the government as well," Rev Ugolor added.
The ANEEJ webinar series was a platform to advance conversations for human rights and accountability.
The speakers and over 60 participants discussed amongst others the spate of adoption of persons and kidnapping money which is Strengthening the kidnappers and activities of Boko Haram. This trend is now making people confused if Nigeria is a state of law or chaos.
It was also pointed out that the huge investments in military defense sadly go to private pockets, and for the purchase of real estates abroad by those in authority, while the nation has become a country of particular concern.
While also observing that the number of unsafe abortion is very high because many young girls patronize quacks due to poverty, it was noted that women have rights to comprehensive health care and a right to live.
In the words of Alu Azege, Executive Director, Health and Rights Initiative, "let us say No to unsafe abortions, making it safe is the right thing to do."
The presenter and Director, CCPR, Centre, Geneva, Switzerland, Roland Chauville commended ANEEJ for doing a great job to find out how Nigeria is doing internationally concerning its human rights obligations,
According to him out of the 22 recommendations made by the UN 3 are priority because they are glaring issues of human rights violations making the citizens to live in fear.
