Renewed Hope Initiative Delivers ₦1.9bn Lifeline to Veterans, Elderly Nationwide as Tinubu Administration Deepens Social Protection
No fewer than 9,500 veterans and vulnerable elderly citizens across the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have benefited from the third edition of the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), spearheaded by the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, in a nationwide social protection drive.
The Edo State edition of the programme, held at the New Festival Hall, Government House, Benin City, saw 250 beneficiaries drawn from the three senatorial districts of the state receive ₦200,000 each in recognition of their service, resilience and contributions to nation-building.
With the theme “Finding Joy in Old Age,” the third edition of the Renewed Hope Initiative Elderly Support Scheme (RHIESS) involves a total disbursement of ₦1.9 billion, with ₦50 million allocated to each state, the FCT and the Defence and Police Officers’ Wives Association (DEPOWA).
The initiative reaffirms the Federal Government’s commitment to the welfare, dignity and wellbeing of senior citizens, particularly those aged 65 years and above, while also extending support to veterans’ families through DEPOWA.
Speaking at the event, Senator Oluremi Tinubu described the scheme as a reflection of a compassionate and people-centred government that recognises the sacrifices and enduring value of its elderly population.
She noted that since the inception of the administration in 2023, the Renewed Hope Initiative has consistently celebrated senior citizens every December as a mark of national gratitude.
Represented by the Coordinator, Office of the First Lady, Edo State, Mrs. Edesili Okpebholo Anani, the First Lady explained that the scheme targets 9,500 vulnerable elderly citizens nationwide, all of whom receive ₦200,000 each to ease economic pressures and improve their quality of life during the festive season.
“As we approach the festive period, it is important that we prioritise our elderly citizens. They walked difficult paths so that younger generations may enjoy smoother roads. It is our moral duty and privilege to ensure they live their later years in comfort, good health and dignity,” she said.
In his goodwill message, the Special Adviser on Health to the Edo State Government, Dr. Andrew Iyamu, emphasised the importance of holistic care for the elderly, urging beneficiaries to adopt healthy lifestyles, engage in light physical exercise, and avoid self-medication through regular medical check-ups and adherence to professional advice.
Several beneficiaries, including Madam Agnes Akhamentalor, Mrs. George Abhulimen, Mr. Etiake Bernard and Mrs. Emorkidi Kate, expressed heartfelt appreciation to the First Lady for the initiative, describing it as timely, compassionate and deeply impactful on their wellbeing and sense of inclusion.
